Sebastian Gomez comes from a traditional coffee-growing family. Together with his father, he owns La Divisa Farm, a 13-hectare property located at 1,700 meters in Circasia, Quindío. The farm is home to beautiful shade trees, including Guamo, Guayacan, Gualandai, and Nogal. A young farmer, Sebastian works alongside his wife on coffee-related tasks and administrative matters. His father, John, has dedicated over 30 years to coffee farming and has cared for the farm since purchasing it in 1995. Sebastian became more deeply involved in coffee in 2014 after returning to Colombia, having witnessed the specialty coffee movement in other countries. Inspired, he and his family decided to focus on specialty coffee, planting varieties such as Geisha and Pink Bourbon. Sebastian shared that they knew patience was essential, letting their hard work speak for itself. Three years later, they began to see remarkable results. Reflecting on the past decade, he notes a shift from quantity to quality as the focus in the coffee industry. Now, they aim to produce differentiated coffees, understanding that this is what the market demands. When we first tasted this coffee, it was part of a larger cupping which featured lots of very high grade Gesha, Sidra, Wush Wush, Striped Bourbon, etc. Although many of the other coffees were 3-4 times the price, this Pink Bourbon from Sebastian Gomez was the standout. The body of the cup was excellent, the flavours were clear yet complex, the cup had a real progression when hot, warm, cool and cold. When hot, we were finding lots of banana loaf and brown sugar; when warm, we were finding lots of white peach and Victoria sponge cake; and when cool, the whole cup turned to strawberry juice. It was really something - every flavour was so well pronounced, like you might expect from a coffee five times the price. The coffee itself also had seriously high quality green coffee sorting - all of the beans were very uniform in shape and size, with very few defects. Many of the other coffees on the same table featured few or none of these qualities that we look for. Needless to say, for the price-point, we felt we could offer this coffee as a real bargain for the quality that it yields.
