In 2004, Fernando fled his home in Caquetá due to the armed conflict, moving to Huila. Colombia has the second-highest population of internally displaced people globally, with 6.8 million affected, according to the Internal Displacement Monitoring Centre (IDMC), highlighting the conflict’s profound civilian impact. Settling in El Pital, where he had family, Fernando began cultivating crops—starting with beans, then peaches, and eventually coffee.
